Helping able and adaptive pickleball players enjoy the great game of pickleball

Welcome to Hazelwood Pickleball

Our Mission

Hazelwood Pickleball is a Nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is: Helping Disabled Veterans, Special Needs and Able Individuals using the great sport of Pickleball.

Our Community

At Hazelwood Pickleball Sports, we believe in the power of pickleball to bring people together through adaptive pickleball. We are proud to support local sports teams and organizations to help athletes of all backgrounds and abilities succeed.

What is Pickleball

Pickleball is a fast-paced, racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s played on a rectangular court, typically about the size of a badminton court, with a net in the middle. The game can be played in singles (one-on-one) or doubles (two-on-two) formats.

Here’s how it works:

Players use paddles, which are similar to large ping-pong paddles, to hit a plastic ball with holes in it.

The game is played with underhand serves, and the ball must bounce once on each side of the net before players can begin volleying.

Points are scored when the ball lands in the opponent’s court and the opponent fails to return it properly.

The first side to reach 11 points (with at least a 2-point lead) wins the game. Matches are often played as best of three.

Pickleball has become increasingly popular due to its simplicity and the fact that it’s easy for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

What is Adaptive Pickleball

Adaptive pickleball is a modified version of traditional pickleball designed to be inclusive and accessible for players with physical or cognitive disabilities. It allows individuals with varying abilities to enjoy the game while making adjustments to suit their specific needs.

Some common modifications in adaptive pickleball include:

  1. Modified Courts and Equipment: The size of the court or the type of equipment (such as paddles or balls) might be adjusted depending on the player's needs.
  2. Rule Adjustments: Rules may be modified to accommodate different physical abilities. For example:
    • Players with mobility challenges may be allowed to use a wheelchair.
    • Some players may receive extra time or flexibility to respond to the ball or serve.
    • In some cases, the game may be played with a lower net or shorter court.

  1. Wheelchair Pickleball: This is a popular adaptation where players use wheelchairs, and the game follows slightly modified rules (e.g., allowing the ball to bounce twice before players must return it).
  2. Cognitive Adaptations: For players with cognitive disabilities, games may include simpler rules or more time to process actions. Coaches or referees may provide additional support and assistance.

The goal of adaptive pickleball is to make the sport accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring everyone can participate, stay active, and have fun regardless of their physical or cognitive limitations. It promotes inclusivity and provides an opportunity for social interaction and competition in a supportive environment.
